How is the snowboarding event at the Olympic Games going?

As we discussed earlier in this article, there are 11 events during these 2023 Winter Olympics. They are distributed as follows: 5 women's events, 5 men's events and a mixed event.

Athletes use similar styles of boards. For some events, speed is the only determining factor, while others are entirely judged. One thing in common: all of them require a lot of technical skills.

Freestyle snowboarding

Several events make up this style of performance :

  • The half-moon: the athlete starts at the heart of a track in the shape of a half cylinder. The aim is to carry out jumps in the air, and figures, while swinging on both sides of this half-moon. Here, the style, the variety, the risk-taking, are judged, but also the height of execution or even the landing are taken into consideration. Each athlete performs two qualifying descents and three passages in the final, only the most successful descent is taken into account for the classification.
  • Slopestyle: the snowboarder descends a compound track obstacles such as walls, jumps, ramps or boxes. The sequence and style of the figures, the level of difficulty and the use of the course modules are judged here. The athletes make two runs in qualifying and three runs in the final, but only the best run is taken into account for the results.
  • The Big air: the participant hurtles down a long track before taking off and performing tricks in the air. The level of difficulty, the style and the quality of execution are noted here. The first in the qualification advance to the last stage. During the latter, each athlete completes three jumps and the two best marks are combined to determine the final result.

Alpine snowboarding

The parallel giant slalom offers the possibility to two snowboarders to compete on two parallel courses. The times of the two races are totaled and the 16 fastest athletes advance to the elimination round where the winner of each race continues the competition.

During the eighth finals, two snowboarders make their descent simultaneously on the parallel courses and the first one at the bottom goes on to the next round. The two fastest compete in the final. Here, only speed matters.

Snowboardcross

Athlete down a slope composed of jumps, bumps or buttes. Two races against the clock take place with only one athlete on the track. The times will determine the finalists.

In the final phase, the athletes descend in groups of four. The top two qualify and advance to the next round, until only two remain for the grand final. Women's and men's snowboard cross take place in a similar way.

A novelty is making its entrance this year, with the mixed snowboard cross by teams. Each team is composed of a man and a woman who will take turns going down the track.

The emblematic snowboarders of the snwoboard

As in all sports, there are its share of great emblematic figures. This sport has many disciplines, it is difficult to select a single name, each of them has its specialists. We can still quote :

  • Terje Haakonsen, called the Mickael Jordan of snowboarding. He arrived on the scene in the 90s and quickly won big competitions and became famous in many videos. But he made history by boycotting the first Olympics of the competition in 1998 following dissatisfaction with the competition system. He then created his own competitions such as the Artic Challenge and the TTR (Ticket To Ride). He is undoubtedly the most influential rider in this sport.
  • Craig Kelly is a super star of the snowboarding games of the 80s. He embodies the American dream of snowboarding by showing himself in pipe competitions before turning to freeride. He is also the face of Jake Burton's brand and has released pro models in his name, such as the mythical Kelly Air. He unfortunately died in 2006 in an avalanche. A memorial was dedicated to him.
  • Shaun White (USA) is the most decorated athlete in the competition, with three gold medals. He unleashes passions and alone represents the image of this sport. It must be said that he is very present in the media (TV appearances, film roles, video games to his name...). He is a legend of the sport!
