The principle of bobsleigh is very simple: each team performs a race against the clock on board a gliding machine on a narrow and winding track, the goal being to achieve a better time than the opposing teams. Bobsleigh can be practiced in teams of two or four, or even individually with the monobob event.

This winter sport appeared in Europe from the end of the XIX century , at the same time as sledging and skeleton. To avoid accidents with hikers and skiers, the first track entirely dedicated to bobsleigh was created in 1871, in the ski resort of Saint-Moritz in Switzerland.

The arrival of bobsleigh at the Olympic Games

Bobsleigh is present at the Olympic Games since the first edition organized in 1924 in Chamonix. The previous year, the International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Federation (FIBT) had been created, which undoubtedly favored the integration of this discipline at the Olympics. Bobsleight has been present at all editions of the Winter Olympic Games, with one exception : during the Squaw Valley Games in 1960, the organizers decided not to build a track, its cost being considered too high.

The men's 4-man bob is the classic test bobsleigh. Each team has four bobsledders at the 2024 Olympics, five in 1928. The rule goes back to four bobsledders per team during the 1932 Olympics, never to change again afterwards. That same year, a new event was also created with the men's 2-man bobsled. For the women's events, we have to wait until 2002 so that the women's 2-man bobsled is integrated into the Olympic program. On the occasion of the Beijing Games, the bobsledders will also inaugurate a new event, the monobob.

History of the bobsleigh JO winners

On the medal table, Germany dominates the ranking and remains the most successful nation with 13 gold medals in bobsleigh, 19 counting those obtained under the FRG and the GDR. On the other hand, Switzerland remains the most medal-winning nation in bobsleigh (31) in the history of the Olympics! On this point, the Swiss delegation exceeds Germany by six units.

At the level of individual records, the German Bogdan Musiol remains the most medalist bobsledder in the history of the Games with 7 medals (1 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze). His compatriots Kevin Kuske and André Lange are, for their part, the most successful bobsledders with 4 gold medals. In women, Kaillie Humphries is the most successful bobsledder with 3 gold medals, but also the most medalist on a par with Elana Meyers. These two champions are the first to have competed with men on the men's 4-man bobsled. It was in 2014, in Sochi.

During the PyeongChang Games in 2018 , Germany has once again illustrated itself by achieving the treble! The German delegation won the gold medal in the men's and women's 2-man bobsled as well as in the 4-man bobsled. A small peculiarity of this edition, two teams achieved the same time in the 2-man bobsled event! The bobsleigh has therefore delivered 4 gold medals instead of 3 during these Olympics.
