The Stanley Cup takes its name from its inventor, Frederick Stanley, the sixth governor General of Canada. The trophy was presented for the very first time in 1893 by the trustees, two men commissioned by Stanley to protect the interests of the cup. Between the year of creation of the tournament and the year 1914, the Cup can be won in two ways: by coming out the winner of a challenge against the defending team or by finishing at the top of the league in which the defending champion team plays.

In 1915, the leaders of the two largest leagues in North America at the time – the National Hockey Association (NHA) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) - reached an agreement: the Stanley Cup will reward the winner between the best team of the two leagues. Two after this agreement, the ANH finds itself replaced by the National Hockey League (NHL). In 1921, it was the turn of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) to see the light of day. She is, thus, authorized to play against the best team of the PCHA in order to determine who will be the team that will face the representatives of the NHL. However, the PCHA had a hard time surviving this fierce competition, which led the league to cease its activities in 1924. Two years later, it is the turn of the WCHL to meet the same fate. The NHL thus finds itself alone in playing for the Stanley Cup.

From 1942 to 1967, only six teams were brought to play in the NHL and share the Stanley Cup. During this period of almost 25 years, the Montreal Canadiens won 10 titles alone, including 5 in a row between 1956 and 1960. But, the Toronto Maple Leafs team is following them very closely with almost 9 victories on the clock. In 1967, the NHL faced competition and decided to double its number of teams. The league is therefore gradually increasing the number of its teams from 12 to 30.
