The Cincinnati Kid, 1965

The legendary actor Steve McQueen plays here the role of Eric Stone aka the Kid from Cincinnati. In the film, Steve McQueen plays a young poker prodigy who challenges a certain Lancey Howard, the greatest poker player in New Orleans. The final scene of the film is the confrontation between the two actors on a 5-Card Stud poker table. A variant of poker that is no longer really popular today but which was the game in vogue in the United States in the 60s. Needless to say, Steve McQueen comes out the winner of this duel and becomes the most famous player in the city.

The Sting (The Sting), 1973

In the film The Scam, the actors Robert Redford and Paul Newman set up a scam to rob a rich thug, played by Robert Shaw, and avenge the death of their friend. Part of the scam is to rig a 5-Card Draw poker game. Our two heroes here show ingenuity and collusion to raise the stakes and win the bet on the green carpet. This film notably earned an Oscar nomination for Robert Redford.

Maverick, 1994

In the movie Maverick, the very popular Mel Gibson plays the role of a professional poker player who easily wins on all the poker tables in Mississippi. The latter intends to win the biggest tournament in the region which takes place on a casino boat. Mel Gibson is here accompanied by the charming Jodie Foster. This comedy is above all a family film that does not lack twists and lightness.

The Players (Rounders), 1998

The movie Rounders or "The Players" in French version is certainly the movie that made millions of young players switch to online poker in the early 2000s. This comedy-drama features the young Matt Damon, a penniless law student who works nights to pay his gambling debts and finance his studies. Matt Damon's life turns into a night gambling fever when his friend Edward Norton gets out of prison and intends to get his financial health back on the poker tables in New York and Atlantic City. Casino Royale, 2006

It was on the occasion of the release of Casino Royale that James Bond added a new string to his bow. Indeed, James Bond, played here by the British Daniel Craig, is also a formidable poker player capable of stripping the bad guys before putting a bullet in their head. It should be noted that the poker variant here is No Limit Texas Hold'em, the star game since the early 2000s.

Runner Runner, 2013

With the duo Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, the movie Runner Runner has a prestigious cast. In this dramatic comedy, the young student Justin Timberlake alias Richie loses his savings on an online poker site. Furious, he decides to fly to Costa Rica, a tax haven that houses the majority of online poker sites. This film echoes many scandals that plagued the online poker industry in the early 2000s such as the Absolute Poker room scam.

As you can see, there is no shortage of movies about poker. Since the beginning of the 60s, the poker table has become the place of confrontation between the classic duos of Hollywood cinema: nice / bad, young prodigy / seasoned veteran, poor / rich.
