Glossary of words used in poker

Online poker is a science . It's a bit like a subject you learn at school. When you are trying to read, understand and speak a new language, for example, you necessarily need a dictionary. A

Acting : Refers to a player who plays the comedy to hide his game.

Add-on : Possibility offered on some tournaments to buy additional chips. This option is usually possible for a limited time during the tournament.

A-game : Refers to a player's perfect way of playing.

All-in : Bet the whole of his carpet on one shot.

American Airlines : Nickname to designate the pair of Aces.

Ante : Mandatory bet paid by the players present at the table before the distribution of the cards. The goal here is to speed up the tournament by increasing the stakes.

B

Bad beat : Denotes an unlucky move when the player had the strongest hand at the start of the action.

Bad run : Qualifies a bad cycle, a series of more or less unlucky defeats on the poker tables.

Bankroll : This is the player's budget, his treasury devoted to the game.

Big blind : The BB or Big blind refers to the mandatory bet paid by the second player to the left of the button.

Bitches : Vulgarly refers to the pair of Ladies.

Blinds : The blinds are the mandatory bets paid by the players at the table, there are two of them: the Small Blind and the Big Blind.

Bluff : Art of deceiving, of misleading his opponents in order to win.

Broke : Ruined, losing his entire bankroll.

C

Free map : Denotes a common card drawn by the dealer without having to bet.

Common cards : These are the open cards drawn by the dealer and placed in the center of the table. These cards are used to form the best possible combination. Five community cards are used in Texas Hold Em and Omaha.

Cash game : These are the tables where players can play and leave at any time. There are no time constraints or number of players.

Chip dumping : Prohibited practice in poker which consists of giving chips to another player present at the table. This practice is an element of collusion between players.

Chip leader : Denotes the player who holds the most chips at a given moment in the tournament.

Chip : These are the poker chips.

Flip corner : Denotes the case where the probability of winning the move is 50/50 for the two players involved in the move.

Collusion : Refers to the illegal practice of agreeing between players to make other players lose. We can cite here the fact of not attacking each other, communicating your cards or doing chip dumping.

D

Deal : Agreement between the players present at the final table of a tournament to share the prize pool according to their respective carpet. This avoids playing until the complete end of the tournament and changing the payment structure originally planned.

Dealer : Denotes the dealer, the one who distributes the cards to the players. In a casino, the dealer is a professional who does not play but only deals the cards and counts the bets.

F

Field : Refers to all the players present at the table.

Fish : Nickname given to the player with little experience or easy to pluck.

Flop : These are the first three open cards dealt at the table.

Fold : Denotes the fact of abandoning the move, throwing the cards to put an end to his participation in the move.

Freeroll : Refers to a poker tournament whose entry is completely free. The prizes to be won are usually very modest: a few tens of dollars, an entrance ticket for a paid tournament, a gift from the room (cap, customized poker chip)... Freerolls are ideal for learning about poker without risk and mastering the poker software of the room.

H

Hand : Refers to the poker hand, the combination that you hold in your hand.

Hand history : This is the history of your hands. Poker rooms allow you to consult your history to help you analyze a move a posteriori. Other software allows you to consult the hand history of your potential opponents.

M

MTT : This is a multi-table tournament. When the number of players reduces to 10 or less, you arrive at the final table.

N

Noob : Vulgarly denotes a layman, a beginner.

Nosebleed : Refers to the games where the stakes are very high, usually more than 100 dollars per blind.

O

Odds : The probabilities or odds.

P

Poker face : Refers to the facial expression of a player who does not let any emotion appear. The player is here unfathomable by his opponents.

Pot : This is the set of chips wagered in the center of the table during a hand.

Prize-pool : Refers to the total amount of prizes to be won from a tournament. The prize pool is generally made up of the entry fees paid by the players when registering for the tournament.

R

Raise : Practice which consists of raise again during a move.

Re-raise : Practice which consists of over-relaunch.

Runner-up : Denotes the player who finishes in second position in a tournament.

Rainbow : Translates to Rainbow. A rainbow designates the open cards of the tableau which are all of different colors.

S

Sit-and-go : Refers to a tournament that starts when a given number of registered players has been reached. This type of tournament has no fixed start time or date. It can start when 5 or 10 players are sitting at the table.

T

TF : Denotes the final table of a tournament.

Turn card : Denotes the fourth open card of the tableau in Texas Hold'em and Omaha.

V

Variance : refers to the fluctuations of gains and losses during a given period for all poker players. All players experience periods of luck and bad luck during their poker career.
